Numbers to 20

In Reception we have been learning about numbers from 10 to 20. We ordered the numbers and made them using tens and ones with Numicon shapes, Dienes and tens frames with counters. We noticed that the numerals show us how many tens and ones. We also said the calculations for each representation, such as 10 + 2 = 12 and some children chose to write some in Outdoor Learning. Some children worked together to make the numbers 1 to 20 in order using the numerals 0 – 9. This was tricky! Great teamwork everyone.

The children added numbers up to 10 using tens frames and Numicon. We counted the apparatus to help us find totals and also practised counting on from the biggest number, for example, for 5 + 4, we said “5” as we touched the 5 Numicon shape and then counted up from 5, “6, 7, 8, 9” as we touched each hole on the 4 shape.

We have also been making 2D and 3D shapes with magnetic Polydron. The children had great fun making squares, rectangles, cubes, pyramids, amazing 12-sided dodecahedrons and even bigger 3D shapes! Well done Reception! Excellent learning, practising and exploring.
