Pok-a-Tok!

This half term, year five are learning all about the ancient Mayan civilisation!

As an introduction to the topic, the children have learnt where the Mayans lived in relation to the United Kingdom and have begun to learn the names of the main cities, such Chichen Itza.

Firstly, we designed Mayan head dresses, which we learnt were adorned with gold and feathers and only worn by people that the Mayans considered important e.g. Kings, queens and high priests.

After this, we learnt about the Mayan ball game called Pok-a-tok, in which players had to use their thighs to bounce a ball into a hoop and the losers were sacrificed to the gods (incidentally, no children were sacrificed while playing this game……we think)
