Reading in Year 3

Year 3 have been enjoying getting started on their new class reading books. Across Year 3, the children will read 5 chapter books that will be rotated around the  classes throughout the year.

Every week in reading, the children will be read to by an adult and enjoy paired and group reading with their peers. They will then focus on a reading skill that they will look to develop throughout the week and end the week with a reading comprehension where they will independently demonstrate the skill they have learnt by answering questions on their class text.

This week we focused on prediction and giving reasons to support our predictions. The children first looked at the front cover to make some initial predictions about the book. We will keep the predictions displayed in the classroom to see if we were right as we read the book.

3EG have started reading ‘How to Train your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell, we enjoyed looking at the cover to predict what will happen and have also used our knowledge from the film to think about how the book and the film may be similar or different. Mrs Grant was very impressed that the children were able to back up their evidence with reasons. When the children were paired reading they enjoyed reading the amusing names for the characters and the alliteration that the author used.

We cannot wait to find out more about Hiccup and Toothless and the Viking tribes.
