The Start of an Adventure Story

Year 4 are preparing to write their own adventure stories. They have discussed stories, similar to that which they are planning to write, to help them understand and learn from the structure, vocabulary and grammar.

Working with a partner they looked at unfamiliar words, such as ornate, recess, gesturing, reveal and ominous and learnt the meaning and the context in which they can be used.

After studying the features of a given text they had fun finding and highlighting them, including short sentences for suspense, expanded noun phrases, speech sandwich and show not tell.

As part of their learning experience Year 4 practised using similes, alliteration and 3 ed sentences. Children have learnt that 3-ed sentences are sentences beginning with 3 related adjectives (each ending in ed),  e.g., Frightened, terrified, exhausted the princess ran for home. This proved to be quite a challenge as it can be difficult to think of three related well chosen adjectives as well as them having to end in ed!

Year 4 are really looking forward to reading and sharing their finished adventure stories! Keep up the super effort!
