Year 1 Science with Plants and Electricity

In Year 1 we have been learning about flowering plants and electricity in our science lessons. Each class has a beautiful coreopsis plant to look after to help us understand what plants need to grow well. Our class plants have been helping us to recognise and name the parts of flowering plants. They also make us smile.😊

We have been finding out about garden plants and wild plants and learning the names of some of these. Have you got any roses, pansies, daisies or dandelion plants growing in your garden or on your way to school? How many of the plants around you can you name?

We have also been learning about electricity. We have been identifying objects that use mains electricity and batteries, or don’t need electricity at all to work, such as pencils! We also learnt about electrical circuits and then everyone made a circuit linking a battery to a light bulb using two wires with crocodile clips at each end. We all thought crocodile clips are well named!  We learnt we had to clip the crocodile clips to the metal wire and not the plastic casing. It was tricky for some of us to connect the crocodile clips to the wires, but everyone succeeded and was very pleased with themselves when their light bulb glowed. Well done Year 1. You have been amazing learners.
