This half term, our Year 5 pupils have been developing their narrative writing skills through the creation of suspense stories inspired by the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood. Using this familiar story as a starting point allowed the children to explore how authors can build tension while still creating original and imaginative pieces of writing.

The children worked hard to describe their character’s thoughts, emotions and actions, using show not tell, in ways that allowed the reader to infer what was happening, rather than being told directly. This led to powerful descriptions, carefully chosen verbs and moments of real suspense.

The children also experimented with figurative language, including similes and metaphors, to deepen atmosphere and engage the reader.

The writing process was just as important as the final outcome. Pupils carefully planned their ideas, drafted their stories, and then edited and improved their work. They showed real resilience and pride, revisiting their writing to refine word choices, improve sentence structure and ensure their suspenseful moments had maximum impact.

Well done Year 5 – your hard work paid off!
