Creatures in 1NA Classroom!

In Year One this half term, our science topic has been animals.

We have learnt about animals families, their offspring and what animals need to survive. We have talked about animals diets and have sorted animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. This week we have had a visit from the Creature Teachers. Jade and Lisa brought in some animals for us to see and hold, and told us lots of information about each one.

Frist we met a ‘Blue Tongued Skink’ and a huge Python. We learnt about them both being reptiles and what they like to eat. We all learnt hot to touch and hold them correctly, and were amazed to find out that the Lizard had a third eye which helps him watch for predators above it’s head.

We then met some insects like a ‘Hissing cockroach’ as well as some animals that have an exoskeleton. Animals with an exoskeleton have a skeleton which they shed every time they grow. We even got to use a torch to show how scorpions are luminous in the moonlight.

We then met some mammals, including a lovely ferret. We talked about how mammals have fur, are warm blooded and give birth to live babies. We loved how quickly a ferret moves, saw it move through the tunnel. It was so soft and even had a funny smell.

Finally we met a beautiful barn owl, we talked about how bird have wings and feathers. We even saw it fly, with Noahan and Emilia being brave enough to have the owl land on their arm. Well done 1NA, what a lovely visitor to have come into school!
