Year 2 Art – Henri Rousseau

This week, our young artists explored the vibrant world of Henri Rousseau by working collaboratively to create a mixed media jungle artwork. Rousseau’s famous jungle paintings, filled with lush plants, bold colours and imaginative animals, provided the perfect inspiration for both creativity and teamwork.

We began by looking closely at Rousseau’s jungle scenes, noticing how he layered shapes, repeated patterns and used unexpected colour combinations.

Working in small groups, the children created a shared artwork using a variety of materials, including paint, tissue paper, felt, stickers and pipe cleaners. Each child contributed their own ideas while also learning to listen, compromise and build on one another’s work. Some focused on creating bold plants and backgrounds, while others added animals, details, and patterns that brought the jungle to life.

Through this project, the children learned that art can be a shared experience and one where ideas grow, overlap, and flourish, much like a jungle itself. Great job Year 2!
