This week, the year 5 children rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to their DT learning – bread making! The base area was filled with the wonderful smell of flour and yeast as the children explored the process of making their very own bread rolls.

The session began with some finger fluency activities, incorporating the ingredients and learning the key skill of kneading. This helped the children to develop fine motor skills needed to work the dough properly and understand how texture and consistency change through kneading.

Once their dough was ready, the children shaped it into their chosen design. They considered different shapes and which would best suit the product. Some children chose to do ring shapes others chose baguette shapes and even some groups chose a 6 and a 7 shaped bread roll!
After baking, the class took time to evaluate these first attempts. They considered what went well, how their rolls looked, felt and tasted and what they might do differently next time. This reflective step helped them think like real designers – thinking about how to improve their work for their next attempt.

It was a fantastic week of learning, creativity and teamwork and the best part? Everyone got to taste their warm, freshly baked bread roll!
