Reception Learning about Autumn

In Reception we have been learning about autumn. We learnt Autumn is one of our four seasons, along with winter, spring and summer. We have been noticing the leaves on the trees in the Reception garden changing colour and falling onto the ground. When we went for an autumn walk it was quite windy and lots of leaves blew off the trees and floated down around us. It was very exciting, like it was raining leaves! We found yellow and red leaves and lots of brown ones. We also found some tiny acorns, red berries and an evergreen bush with white flowers that smelt gorgeous.

We learnt that some animals hibernate to help them survive during winter when it gets colder and there is less food available. Hibernation is like a long, deep sleep. Queen bumblebees, bats, dormice and hedgehogs hibernate. We also learnt that many birds migrate or fly from the UK to warmer countries for the winter. Did you know, some birds migrate here for the winter from colder places in northern and eastern Europe, including starlings, blackbirds and the pink-footed goose? Here are some photos of Plum class during their autumn walk.
