At the start of the week, we were learning how to spot related and unrelated fractions which we used to add and subtract fractions. “It was quite easy to understand one we’d learnt it because it all fits together and we’re using it all the time.” – Jessica
We then applied our understanding of related and unrelated fractions to finding equivalent fractions to add fractions with different denominators.
“I found it a bit hard at the beginning and then it started getting really easy because I understood the method. I asked for help when I got stuck and then I practised using the same method. Even though we had harder questions, it got easier and easier because I knew the method. I’m proud of myself!” – Thomas
“Today I partitioned mixed numbers so I could add them to fractions. In the extension, I had to work out the missing numerator and the missing whole number from a number sentence. It was tricky at first because they had different denominators. I tried different numbers that I thought would work and used that to find out what would work in the gaps.” – Brandon G
Well done to all of Year 5 for working hard to add and subtract fractions with different denominators and applying this knowledge to adding fractions to mixed numbers. It was great to see people persevering when the questions moved from being arithmetic focused towards more reasoning and problem solving. Well done Year 5!
