This term in our Year 1 art lessons we have been exploring sculpture. The children have ended the term by creating beautiful 3D birds using newspaper, sugar paper and polystyrene. The children experimented with different materials and techniques, practising their cutting, tearing, scrunching and drawing skills. The children looked at artists such as Andrea Butler to inspire their work.
The children began the topic by looking at different types of birds, paying close attention to their shapes, patterns and features. The children loved observing the different types of wings and beaks and the variety of textures on their feathers.
The children scrunched and tore different types of paper and explored different ways to make texture for feathers. Some children discovered that by tearing paper instead of cutting it made a more natural feathered effect. For the birds body the children cut ovals out of polystyrene and decorated them using thick and thin lines for features such as eyes and beaks or to create texture on the wings and tails.
The children worked hard to use their skills and inspiration from artists to create their 3D sculptures. The variety of birds created was incredible – no two were the same and everyone had so much fun and took so much pride in their work.
We can’t wait to continue our art journey next term. What should we make next?
