Year 2 have been finding out all about plants and what they need to survive. Each class carried out an experiment to see what would happen to their hyacinth bulb under certain conditions.
2GD’s bulb had no light and no water.
2FC’s bulb had light but no water.
2KM’s bulb had water and light.
2KL’s bulb had no light but water.
The children spent several weeks watching their bulbs. Unfortunately, 2GD’s and 2FC’s bulbs didn’t grow, although 2FC’s did produce a very small shoot.
2KM’s bulb grew very quickly and produced an amazing flower.
The class were very intrigued by the bulb in 2KL as it had grown in the dark, but unlike 2KM’s bulb the leaves were yellow and it didn’t produce a flower in the allocated time.
However, once the bulb was exposed to the light and heat the leaves became green and the bulb started to begin the flowering process.
After a week in the light and heat, the bulb, although smaller than 2KM’s, flourished and amazingly produced a super pink flower unlike the white flowers produced from the other bulb.
The children have developed a very good understanding of what plants need to survive and have first hand experience of looking after their own bulbs and enjoying watching them mature into beautiful flowers.
