This term, Year 4 have been exploring the fascinating discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, inspired by the book ‘Secrets of A Sun King’. The children explored the mystery of the tomb through a hot seating activity, where they role-played key figures from the discovery, including capturing Howard Carter’s excitement as he uncovered the steps to the tomb. Then, they wrote diary entries from Carter’s perspective, describing his emotions on that day.
The children were then given the opportunity to explore the often-overlooked perspective of Hussein, the young water boy who accompanied Carter. Through his eyes, they examined the controversy over who truly “discovered” the tomb, reflecting on themes of recognition and fairness.
Finally, a few children wrote diary entries as Lord Carnarvon, Carter’s sponsor, imagining his thoughts as he received the urgent message to travel to Egypt upon hearing of the discovery.
Below are some examples of these wonderful diaries.
