The children in Year R are developing a fantastic understanding of number. Over the past few weeks the children have looked at the composition of numbers between 0 and 10. For example, looking at the number 7 and understanding it can be composed with 3 + 4, 5 + 2 or even 2 + 2 + 2 + 1. The children have also been learning their number bonds to 5, and some children even created number bonds games at home. They found 5 objects in their house, and made number bonds such as 4 teddies add 1 car = 5 altogether, super! As part of understanding numbers to 10, the children have also began to work out what is 1 more and 1 less than a given number. The children have enjoyed using a variety of resources to do this, such as bead strings, number lines and counters. We can’t wait to see where the children’s maths learning goes next!
