The children in Year 2 are having fun continuing to learn more about number and place value. They are becoming confident at recognising the value of each digit in a two digit number and understand that the position of the digit determines its value.
Moving their learning forward they have been using the expanded form. For example 32 is three tens and two ones, in the expanded form it is shown as 30 + 2 = 32, 20 + 12 = 32, 10 + 22 = 32 and 0 + 32 = 32.
For these activities the children have used concrete resources (Dienes) to improve their maths knowledge. Concrete resources, such as Dienes, multi-link and Rekenrek, can help children to understand the relationship between numbers and the number system. The children can instantly see how many tens and ones they have. From using the concrete resources they then move forward to become more confident at drawing their own pictorial representations.
Year 2 enjoyed trying to methodically find different ways to expand numbers. Well done Year 2!
