This term in Year 4, we have been reading The Whale Watchers by Dougie Poynter.
This is a gripping adventure about Finn and his brother Jesse as they go on a trip to Scotland, much to Finn’s disgust! The boys meet a girl who shows them all of the local wildlife and the adventure ends up taking a turn for the worse. Using their quick thinking, the trio (and Rain the dog), end up saving the beached whale that they discover and the story ends with Finn feeling much happier about his holiday and he can’t wait to go back.
The children really enjoyed this book as we looked into the character development of Finn and how the author portrayed the emotions and feelings of the main character. With a range of drama, whole class discussion and independent thinking, the children delved deeply into the main aspects of the story. We predicted how the team might save the whale and came up with some brilliant ideas as to how we could save a whale. This book really captured the imagination of the children and they all learned a valuable lesson about looking after the planet along with it.
