Year 1 Maths Fun

Year 1 have made a great start to their maths learning this year and have particularly enjoyed their practical maths lessons. Over the last few weeks the children have used a wide range of manipulatives to support their learning.

One activity the children really enjoyed, was working in pairs to count out a set number of objects from a larger amount. Together, the children picked a number card and then counted that number of objects from a basket full of cubes or counters. They placed them onto a 10s frame and finally counted the objects with 1:1 correspondence to check they had the right amount.

The teachers were very pleased to hear the children counting out loud verbally, using 1:1 correspondence so as not to miss any objects and loved being challenged to correct the teachers (intentional) counting mistakes.

Another activity the children have completed was finding fewer, the same and more than a given number.

In pairs they worked together to pick a card with a range of pictures. The children then had to use their learning from previous lessons to count the objects on the card to find their start number. Finally they used Unifix cubes to make a number that was greater than the start number, the same and also fewer.

After they had finished, as a whole class the children discussed a challenge set by Tiny the Turtle to apply what they had to learnt to solve a reasoning problem.

Keep up the super maths Year One!
