Launching Ancient Greece in Year 5

This half term as part of our learning in history, Year 5 will be learning about Ancient Greece. We will explore the impact that it had upon the world and how their legacy can still be seen today. To launch our learning, the students learnt about Ancient Greek writing and how the letters differ to our own. We found it quite tricky as we had to use the sounds that the letters made rather than what they look like. An example of this is that their letter H actually makes a long e sound like you would find in bear. We wrote our names and tried to solve secret messages.

We will also be creating our own Greek pots this half term in art so we had a sneak peek at the Ancient Greek’s pottery and their importance. We discovered that they were used for a variety of different uses and were not only practical items but also considered art. We looked at the repeated patterns that they used and had a go at them before designing our own. We used our knowledge of their Gods and myths to help us.
