Why are recipes important?

This week, the Year 4 students explored the importance of recipes as part of our new topic, “What can you learn from following a recipe?” To start, they were given a variety of ingredients with only one instruction: “Make a salad wrap with a lemon dip.” The children had to determine the quantities of each ingredient themselves. They found making the lemon dip particularly challenging—most used too much garlic and lemon, resulting in an unpleasant taste.

Next, they had the opportunity to make the salad wrap and lemon dip again, this time following a recipe. Upon reflecting on their experience, the children agreed that they did a much better job the second time around and appreciated having the instructions and ingredients list. Their second wrap certainly tasted better too!
