Year 3 Investigate: Which Soil Helps Plants Grow?

Year 3 have been busy carrying out an exciting science experiment! We planted coleus (Coleus scutellarioides) and scabious (Scabiosa) seeds in three different types of soil: rich soil, poor soil and sand. We are investigating whether the plants grow differently in each type of soil.

The children are waiting in anticipation to see what happens. Some of our seedlings have already started to germinate, which has created lots of excitement in the classroom! We will continue to observe and record our plants carefully as they grow.

We have also been learning about the five things plants need to survive: water, light, air, nutrients and the right temperature. To show what we have learnt, the children created colourful posters explaining what plants need to grow and stay healthy.
