In Year One this half term we have been busy learning about portable snacks in our D&T lessons. A portable snack is a food that is portable and therefore can travel easily with us. It needs to be small, easy to hold and can be eaten without a knife or a fork.
We learnt about food hygiene and how important it is to store food correctly. We looked at how foods should be prepared and how we should prepare ourselves, like washing our hands and tying back our hair. We then spent time learning lots of food techniques that we might need for our portable snack, and how we would make them. We learnt ways to cut foods safely, how to peel and how to grate.

After we had learnt all of these new techniques, it was time to decide which portable snack we would like to make. We talked about which snacks we eat the most and which would be easiest to make. We all decided a sandwich or a wrap fills us up the best, so we then decided on which toppings and fillings we liked the most.
Today we spent the time making and eating our snacks. We were so impressed with the children’s ideas and how well their made their sandwiches and wraps. We also enjoyed the picnic part after, they were delicious!
