Reception Maths

We have been very busy in Reception practising early number skills. We have been finding one more and one less than numbers up to five using counters on 5s frames, our fingers and, with great excitement, our classroom buses! Five children sat on chairs on our bus as we sang, “The Wheels on The Bus”. When the teacher said “Ding Ding!”, one child got on the bus to show one more. Then we started with five children on the bus and one child got off each time to show one less. Each time we said, “One more/less than ____ is ____”.

We have also been exploring the composition of numbers up to 5 by splitting them into two parts on part whole models and 5s frames using double-sided red and yellow counters. We also said the addition calculations. For example, children moved counters into part whole models to show 3 as 1 + 2 = 3, 2 + 1 = 3 and 3 + 0 = 3, and used red and yellow counters to represent 3 + 1 = 4.

One of our independent jobs was to choose a shape picture challenge to make using pattern blocks. The children did a fantastic job, even though one of them was very tricky. Well done Reception!
