Y4 River Visit

During the Spring term, year 4 have been learning about rivers an the water cycle. To accompany the learning, 4ML and 4LC visited Kingfisher Barn, by the River Stour (4EG and 4 EW will be going after half-term).  Both classes were blessed with beautiful, sunny weather which made the trip even more enjoyable. The children walked from the school to the river and, once there, the staff from Kingfisher Barn took the children on walks along the banks of the Stour. The children learnt all about the river’s source and mouth, and all the different plants and animals that make the river habitat their home. They were also told about the cows that the council used to graze the banks of the river and how they help to maintain the environment in a natural and eco-friendly way.

The highlight for many however, was the pond dipping. The children took it in turns to dip their nets into the pond to discover what it contained. Once the specimens were tipped into trays, the children could use identification cards to try and name the creatures they had caught. As well as whirligig beetles and leeches, were large menacing looking dragonfly lava and, most popular, newts. The children loved observing the creatures close-up and watching their behaviour.

Both trips were a huge success and the children were fantastic ambassadors for the school. We are very grateful to the staff of Kingfisher Barn for a fun and fascinating morning! Kingfisher Barn and a walk by the Stour is an fantastic way to spend a few hours and many of the children said they would love to visit again. Some already have!
