The Year 4 children were extremely excited to welcome BCP’S Director of Planning, Wendy Lane, into school for their topic landing. The children have spent this half term designing their own idyllic settlement, in preparation to present their work to Wendy.
Wendy’s visit began with a question and answer session where the children, as geographers, showed a real sense of curiosity about the world within their enquiry. For example, some fantastic questions Year 4 asked were:
‘Would you consider changing Bournemouth to a city?’
‘What is your favourite town: Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole?’
‘What did you study to become a town planner?’
‘If you planned on building a new play park, what would you need to consider first?’
Each child received individual feedback on their designs and Wendy was extremely impressed with the unique, well-thought out plans she was presented with. As Geographers, the children demonstrated the ability to express well-balanced opinions when justifying the thought process behind their designs. For example, the children could explain their reasoning behind choosing particular services and facilities, as well as how they were mapped out to ensure safety of citizens and to reduce congestion.
Year 4 have certainly inspired BCP’s Director of Planning to new ideas!
