As part of their river topic, 4LC had a lovely morning at Kingfisher Barn, next to the river Stour.
The children had a very enjoyable and educational time walking the banks of Stour with Barn’s river experts and looking out for some of its wildlife and plants. They learnt all about the otters and kingfishers that live on the river and saw numerous birds such as ducks, moorhens and black headed gulls.
Back at the Barn itself, the children had a go at pond dipping and discovered a wider range of creatures, living in it’s depths. Numerous newts and tadpoles were netted, as well as an abundance of insect lava and water beetles.
4LC did themselves proud by showing a real interest in the information given and asking lots of questions to expand their knowledge even further. Here is what some of the children thought of the trip:
I enjoyed the pond dipping because we found lots of creatures – Arty
I liked when I caught a tadpole because you could see how it was growing – Keris
I liked the pond dipping because we caught all sorts of creatures like newts and tadpoles. When the newts walked on your hand it was really calming. – Buddy
My favourite aspect of the river trip was pond dipping because we caught lots of things like newts, tadpoles and bloodworms. – Hani
I enjoyed looking at interesting wildlife and watching the newts swim. – Dylan
I very much enjoyed the river trip. My favourite part was I got to get close to a swan and a newt called Timmy. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would recommend going!
A huge thank you to all the people at Kingfisher Barn who made the trip such an interesting and enjoyable experience.
