In Reception we have been exploring number bonds within 10 in different ways. The children have been using counters and cubes to help them add number bonds. In pairs the children split cube towers of 7, 8 and 9 into two parts and said the addition calculations. We have been learning that 3 + 4 = 7 and 4 + 3 = 7. We read addition calculations together and the children used counters on butterfly outlines to help them work out the totals. For example, we read 3 + 3 = ____ together, then the children put 3 counters on one side of their butterfly and 3 counters on the other side. We found out how many there were altogether by counting all of the counters.
The children have also been adding number bonds using the big 10s frame with double-sided counters. They have been finding totals by counting all the counters and by counting on from the first number. Some children found missing number bonds in calculations such as 5 + ___ = 9 using the big 10s frame and then drawing counters on their own 10s frames.
The children used Numicon shapes independently to find number bonds that added up to 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in different ways. Well done Reception.
