Year 3 Folk Artists

On our art journey through the ages this week, Year 3 found out about the American folk artist, Harriet Powers. Harriet Powers was born into slavery in 1837 and created quilts after she was freed. However, only two of her quilts survived, named Bible Quilt and Pictorial Quilt. These works reflected her belief, astrological events and local legends of the era.

In RE, we have been learning about Christianity and the parables they believe were told by Jesus. We used the parable of ‘The Sower, the Seeds and the Soil’, to create our own biblical quilt.

Instead of quilting, we used collaging techniques to make shapes and layered them to create the 8 different scenes that made up our final ‘quilt’ and the parable.
