Y5 Learning This Week

 Week commencing 17.01.22

Year 5

If you are isolating at home this week, here are some activities you can try.  These will cover the same objectives as those children who are still at school.

  1. English
  2. Maths
  3. Spellings
  4. Topic

English and reading

Lesson 1

Today’s lesson is the start of a new writing topic: to design an invention that will help the environment! You will be looking at a model text before identifying the features of an instructional text. At the end of this lesson, reflect on what you would like to create, as this will link to your topic lesson. For example, it might be a machine that collects plastic bottles and churns them back out as seeds that can be replanted.

Lesson 2

The second writing lesson this week is a grammar focus on prepositional phrases. You will use your invention design to write sentences that have a prepositional phrase to show where each part of the machine can be found.

Lesson 3

The final writing lesson this week is a planning lesson. Use the attached planning sheet to record your ideas for an invention. There is a specific ‘warning’ box, as these are key features in instructional texts. For example: do not move the machine once plugged in as it may combust!

Lesson 4

Today’s reading comprehension lesson is a skills lesson. Work through the lesson doing fastest finger first, grammar work, quick questions and then the longer question at the end. When you answer the longer question, remember to use evidence to support your answer.

Maths

Lesson 1

This lesson will help you to understand how to add mixed numbers. Remember that a mixed number is a number that has a whole and a fraction. There are two ways to do this so watch the video carefully before you attempt the worksheet.

Lesson 2

Today you are going to learn how to subtract fractions. This is just the same method as adding fractions so you need to remember your previous learning. Make sure that the denominators are the same before you attempt to subtract the fractions.

Lesson 4

Today you are going to learn how to subtract a fraction from a mixed number. To do this you need to make sure that the denominators are the same. It is often easier to change the mixed number into an improper fraction before you start working.
