Over the past couple of weeks Year 5 have been learning about maps and compasses, and we’ve even managed to have a go at some orienteering. We talked about the history of maps and the wide variety that we commonly use from Satellite Navigation on mobile phones to the Bournemouth Bus Route map. We’ve also discussed why we need maps and how long human beings have been making them. We looked at ancient maps, maps of the night sky, the oceans, the London Underground and theme park maps.
We then had a session on how to use a compass and put it into practice by doing an orienteering exercise (you may have seen these odd sites as you’ve been leaving the school each day).
The children worked in pairs to solve the clues and we had a 100% success rate. (OS Maps and compasses might be a popular Christmas present this year!!!)
