This half term Year 4 were introduced to the use of cuisenaire rods to extend and support their learning in maths. The children spent a lesson familiarising themselves with the cuisenaire rods through a variety of activities. First they explored the different values that each of the cuisenaire rods could represent – the possibilities are endless!
Then they put the cuisenaire rods into size order and worked with a partner, taking it in turns to remove one of the rods for their partner to identify, without looking.
Their final challenge was to attempt to build a cube or a pyramid, although this proved almost impossible for most of them!
Having familiarised themselves with the equipment, the children spent the next lesson using the cuisenaire rods to identify and record equivalent fractions.
